Individuals Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People purchasing such medications should be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
