British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of approach shafts leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
