The United Kingdom and the United States have announced a significant trade agreement that will maintain zero duties on British medicine products going into the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to raise funding on drugs through the public health system. This pledge secures that duties on these key exports will be held at nothing for a duration of 36 months.

This deal follows earlier threats to hike duties on patented drug imports, with potential rates discussed reaching double the cost.

"This arrangement between the Britain reinforces the international landscape for new treatments and establishes long-overdue equity to American-British drug exports," an announcement said.

Trade Significance

Drugs represent one of the the United Kingdom's most significant exports to the US, which is easily the largest buyer for major UK drugmakers.

Trade data reveal that in the year prior to September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products valued at billions to the US. This amount accounted for a significant portion of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This agreement secures employment, stimulates capital expenditure and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a international leader for life sciences," a government official commented.

Detailed NHS Changes

The pact entails several key commitments from the UK:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will lift the cost ceiling at which it judges new therapies to be prohibitively costly by a quarter.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a target to double total public funding on drugs from 0.3% of the national economy to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Refund Ceiling: The sum drug companies must pay back to the NHS to prevent overspending will be limited at 15%. Previously, rebates exceeded twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a long-running row between the pharmaceutical industry and the UK government over medicine costs and approval rates.

The disagreement were exacerbated by claims that US consumers were charged significantly more for the same drugs than consumers in the other developed nations.

Over the last 18 months, several major manufacturing plans in the UK have been halted or cancelled, while major investments have been directed toward US facilities.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS needed to spend more on drugs, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a percentage of its resources over the past decade.
