A Tooth Fairy Tale Review: Cartoon Adventure with a Sprinkling of Family-Friendly Preteen Love Story

In this cartoon journey aimed at tweens, the fairy community is dedicated to collecting teeth from slumbering youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (voiced by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about devoting his life to gathering baby teeth—a sentiment that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings behind it all: the fairies deliver the teeth to unseen goblins, who provide metal in exchange. But Van’s curiosity is piqued when he spots a goblin (played by Larkin Bell), who proves to be far from the hideous gnome he had imagined.

A Forbidden Bond and Shared Threat

Everything is prepared for an exciting quest with a gentle touch of teen romance (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for younger kids). The fairy and goblin groups are separated from one another, and nothing fuels the excitement of secrecy to bring people as one. Both groups as seen here are remarkably alike, yet each holds biased views about the opposite side. The fairies are supposed to be self-centered types, given to stealing anything they want, while goblins are allegedly dim-witted, foul-smelling, and backward, but are in fact intelligent and advanced in technology.

Of course, this scenario requires a shared foe to unite against, and this is duly provided in the form of some nasty spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret about their intentions: they want to eat the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not especially competent, villains.

Target Audience and Overall Impression

You won’t find all that many animated films targeting the viewer group that is starting to experience early romances, but are not mature enough for whatever 14-year-olds view these days instead of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster falls into this age group, this is unlikely to become their new all-time fave, but it’s a decent choice.

A Tooth Fairy Tale releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom beginning October 24.
